It only takes 15 minutes by car to drive to Gubbio, which is a town dating from the Middle Ages, perched against the mountain, Monte Ingino. There is a large supermarket and every Tuesday it is market day, when local produce is on display and for sale. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and terraces and for a reasonable cost you can enjoy the local cuisine. There is also a hospital in Gubbio.
Further afield there are several beautiful cities worth a visit. At a distance of about 45kms is Assisi , a beautifully restored city, famous as the birthplace of St. Francis. Perugia , the capital of Umbria , is about 50kms from Gubbio. This grand city, of which the old town centre is situated on top of a mountain, is well worth a visit. The city if famous for its international university and the late gothic Dom San Lorenzo where, according to legend, the wedding ring of the holy Mary is kept. Each year in July, the Umbria Jazz festival takes place in Perugia .
Umbertide and Citta de Castillo in the north of Umbria are also worth visiting. The Lago di Trasimeno and Fano on the Adriatic Coast can be visited for a day of beach activity. In the south of Umbria are the proud cities of Todi, Spoletto, Orvietto (famous for its wines) and Terni . Even Rome and Florence (both at a distance of about 200kms) can be visited in a day.
